Growing Business
International Trade
The
International Trade Office assists Iowa companies in devleoping or expanding
international markets for their products and/or services.
Iowa exports to over 180 countries throughout the world. During FY ’09,
the total exports for the state of Iowa were $10.7 billion, close to the $11 billion
in FY ’08. Iowa’s leading manufactured export category is machinery,
which accounted for more than 21 percent ($2.2 billion) of the state’s total exports
of manufactures in FY ’09. The machinery category includes agricultural
machinery, construction machinery, appliances, food processing equipment and industrial
machinery.

Export Trade Assistance Program (ETAP)
The ETAP program provides assistance to Iowa’s small manufacturers and processors
to enter new markets outside the United States. Because many of these smaller
companies have limited international resources, ETAP provides not only the incentive
to look at new markets, but the financial support necessary to pursue those opportunities.
In FY ’09,
- 56 contracts were signed with ETAP
- 28 participants were new to market
- Companies reported results of more than $4.6 billion in generated
sales at the events
