U.S. Census: Iowa's capital growing faster than Denver, Portland

Iowa's capital city, Des Moines, is the fastest growing metro area in the Midwest – faster than Chicago, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and St. Louis – and even growing faster than Denver and Portland, according to U.S. Census data. Forbes also says Des Moines is also a top five place in the country for business and careers.

The Des Moines area has a diverse and strong economy anchored by one of the highest concentrations of finance and insurance operations in the country. The Des Moines metro area is growing so fast that one Des Moines suburb, Ankeny, is growing faster than any other city in the Midwest or Northeast with a population more than 50,000 people.

Other Iowa metro areas that are seeing rapid growth include Iowa City (1.2 percent growth from 2015 to 2016), Omaha-Council Bluffs (1.1 percent) and Cedar Rapids (0.7 percent).

Iowa is consistently rated by CNBC as being one of the best places to live in the country. Visit our quality of life page to read more about life in Iowa.
