Medical device prototyping workspace opens in Iowa City

Protostudios is located in MERGE Innovation Space, a new space in downtown Iowa City offering vital resources and connections to successfully create, launch and grow new companies in Iowa’s Creative Corridor.

A new work space designed for helping startup companies design and manufacture medical device prototypes opened this month in downtown Iowa City. The space, named protostudios, will help entrepreneurs rapidly commercialize their ideas. Sponsors for the facility include the University of Iowa, a top biomedical research university also located in Iowa City, and protostudios is expected to serve as a terrific resource for both entrepreneurial faculty and local residents.

Protostudios, which will be co-located with a coworking space, will include all the resources needed for manufacturing medical device prototypes:

  • Milling
  • Workshop
  • Laser/waterjet cutter
  • Printed Circuit Board Fabrication
  • Industrial designer and engineer on staff
  • Meeting/classroom space

This new facility is the latest addition to a series of incubators connected with the University of Iowa.
