Iowa cities top annual economic development rankings

Each year, Site Selection magazine ranks communities in the U.S. by the most significant economic development projects from the past year. For the third year in a row, Sioux City topped the list for cities of its size.

A “project,” as defined by Site Selection, is a business creation or expansion which involves a minimum capital investment of $1 million, 20 or more new jobs created or 20,000 or more square feet of new space.

Sioux City had 26 projects meeting those criteria in 2017— the most of any metro area in the country with a population less than 200,000 people. It also had more than twice the projects of the second-ranked metro in its category.

Sioux City is a hub of food and ingredient production. Major employers in the area include Seaboard Triumph Foods, Tyson Foods, Wells Enterprises and several other food manufacturers and processors.

Other Iowa communities to make the Site Selection rankings include the Omaha, Neb.-Council Bluffs, Iowa metro area, which placed first in metro areas with a population of 200,000 to 1 million. Des Moines-West Des Moines, a hub of finance and insurance, placed ninth on the list.

Burlington, Iowa ranked second in projects for communities on the Mississippi River, just ahead of fourth-ranked Dubuque, Iowa, and Clinton, ranked fifth. Iowa’s Mississippi River communities have a strong manufacturing tradition, especially in the agricultural and construction equipment subsector.

U.S. News & World Report recently named Iowa the best state in the country in its 2018 rankings. Compare Iowa to other states on key site selection metrics with our 50-state comparison tool.
