In recognition of its strengths in the industrial biotechnology sector, from July 8-11, Iowa will have the distinct honor of hosting the annual BIO World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology. CEOs, business leaders, academia and decision makers from the U.S. and all over the world will travel to Iowa to exchange insights and information in this industry.

Giants like George Washington Carver, Henry A. Wallace and Norman Borlaug all had deep ties to Iowa, which today is home to more plant and soil scientists than any other U.S. state. Industry leaders such as Corteva Agriscience, Bayer, POET, REG, Syngenta and many others have operations in Iowa. Ames is home to one of America’s preeminent agricultural research institutions, Iowa State University, the National Science Foundation’s Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals, and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory.

Iowa is also home to the second-most acres of harvestable biomass. Forty-three processing facilities in Iowa produce over one quarter of U.S. ethanol, and 12 refineries produce 16 percent of U.S. biodiesel. The state’s legislature created America’s first Biochemical Production Tax Credit in 2016, which the U.S. Department of Agriculture calls the “strongest existing incentive package for the global biobased chemical industry.
