Company Spotlight: Kemin Industries leverages plant science to improve human health

June 24, 2014

For more than 50 years at Kemin Industries, we have used innovative science to manufacture over 500 specialty ingredients that advance the health and nutrition of both humans and animals. This year, Kemin had the chance to showcase our products at the 2014 IFT Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.

At IFT, more than 18,000 of the world’s top food science and technology professionals joined exhibitors to learn about innovative products, ingredients, technology developments and trends that shape our industry.

We’re no strangers to development and innovation. Since our founding in 1961, Kemin has expanded both nationally and globally. In 1970, we established our first international regional headquarters in Belgium. Following this, we continued to extend our reach and built regional headquarters in Singapore, China, India and Brazil.

While we have expanded internationally, Des Moines remains our home and our headquarters. We have thrived in the state due in part to Iowa’s low cost of doing business, the highly educated workforce necessary to advance innovation and the state’s strong support of bioscience companies. All of these elements, have led to significant growth in Iowa’s bioscience industry over the last decade – outpacing the nation by 15.8 percent.

Our product offerings have also expanded significantly over the years. During the 1980s, we carried our expertise from the animal feed industry into the human food industry by creating antimicrobials and mold inhibitors for human food.

We then became a market leader in eye health and nutrition with the introduction of FloraGLO® Lutein – an ingredient made from marigold flowers and vital to the health of skin and eyes. This was a game changer and helped us launch the human nutrition and health division. Currently, we have six other divisions including food technologies, personal care, animal nutrition and health, companion animal health, pet food and pharmaceutical. Today, we are honored to be recognized as one of the world’s leading biotechnology companies and we will continue growing to expand our reach in improving health and nutrition for all.
