Tech leaders breeze into Iowa

June 5, 2014

Facebook, Microsoft and Google have all recently located data centers here in the state, and it’s no surprise why! These industry giants are flocking to Iowa to take advantage of our low cost of doing business, renewable energy innovations and more.

Both Facebook and Microsoft recently announced plans to expand and build a second data center in West Des Moines and Altoona, respectively. These expansions create hundreds of construction and tradesmen jobs, plus high-tech permanent jobs.

In addition to Iowa’s centralized, weather-safe location and reliable utilities, we also offer a friendly regulatory climate. In 2009, we passed legislation to assist a wide range of businesses, including data centers, with multi-level incentives based on qualifying investments.

Within the state, data centers are eligible for 50 to 100 percent refund on sales and use tax for electricity, equipment, computer and temperature control purchases. Also, Iowa’s utility costs are typically 15 to 20 percent less than the national average. And we’re also a national leader in wind-generated electricity. Facebook’s Altoona data center will be its first facility powered 100 percent by renewable wind energy.

And in Council Bluffs, Google partnered with MidAmerican Energy to increase its wind energy usage to 100 percent, with the ability to support future expansions with wind power. MidAmerican and Google have been working on this endeavor since 2007 and together are reducing energy costs.

Google’s Paul Froutan noted, “In Council Bluffs, Iowa, we found one of the best locations around the world with the right combination of infrastructure capacity and other resources to support an Internet data center of this size.” We couldn’t agree more with Mr. Froutan. Iowa has the unique resources needed to support high capacity data centers and allow for the growth and expansion of the world’s most sizeable and influential corporations. - IEDA Director Debi Durham
