Home Base Iowa Act Signed into Law

May 30, 2014

On Memorial Day at Camp Dodge, Governor Terry Branstad took a major step forward in making Iowa a more veteran-friendly state by signing the Home Base Iowa Act into law. The passage of this Act and implementation of its important provisions will help welcome those who have served to a state where their skills and service can translate into well-paying careers and high quality of life. The Home Base Iowa Act provides many advantages for veterans in Iowa, including: military pension income tax exemption; military homeownership assistance; permissive veterans preference in hiring practices; occupational licensure for military training and experience; tuition and credit transfer benefits and free veterans-related license plates. This Act is one piece of the much larger effort our state has been making to better thank and recruit our veterans for their service and impressive skill sets. The cornerstone of this effort is Home Base Iowa, a non-profit, private-public partnership designed to help veterans find jobs, explore careers paths and make a smoother transition to civilian life in Iowa. Businesses and communities alike have already signed to hire more veterans and ensure the success of this worthwhile mission. These efforts are not going unnoticed. This year, Iowa became one of only four states to earn the All * Vet State designation by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's Hiring Our Heroes program for our outstanding veteran-friendly job markets, benefits packages and overall quality of life. Home Base Iowa team members have also been traveling around the state and to our nation's capitol to attend career fairs and educate veterans on the Home Base Iowa initiative. The momentum of this movement is tremendous, and we will only continue working to spread the word and welcome our veterans to Iowa with open arms. Our nation's heroes deserve nothing less.
