Home Base Iowa Act Passes

May 6, 2014

Veterans and businesses in Iowa took a great step forward with the recent passage of the Home Base Iowa Act.  As co-chairs of the Home Base Iowa initiative, myself and Congressman Leonard Boswell are proud of our elected officials and the State of Iowa for recognizing the value of both thanking our nation’s veterans and recruiting these skilled workers to the state. Home Base Iowa’s fundamental mission is to make Iowa the state of choice for returning military men and women. This is ultimately very beneficial to Iowa businesses – like my own, Casey’s General Stores – that will see an influx of skilled, reliable workers to the state.  Nearly 3,000 jobs have been pledged to veterans across the state and more than 50 companies have been designated Home Base Iowa Businesses. The Home Base Iowa Act provides the following advantages for veterans in Iowa:

  • Military pension income tax exemption
  • Military homeownership assistance
  • Permissive veterans preference in hiring practices
  • Occupational licensure for military training and experience
  • Tuition and credit transfer benefits
  • Free veterans-related license Plates

Governor Terry Branstad plans to sign this act into law on Memorial Day at Camp Dodge, a ceremony most befitting this important set of provisions. For more information about Home Base Iowa, visit
