Team Iowa’s Outstanding Performance in 2013 Governor’s Cup Rankings

March 3, 2014

Today I had the great opportunity to announce that Iowa placed 6th nationally in Site Selection magazine’s 2013 Governor’s Cup per capita rankings.

Solid business growth in cities across the state paved the way for Iowa’s stunning performance in the annual competition. Considered by many as the Olympics of state competitiveness, Iowa’s decisive performance reinforces that the state’s strategic economic development policies attract business and create opportunities for companies to grow.

Today’s rankings come on the heels of two other prominent Site Selection awards for Iowa. In November 2013, Governor Terry Branstad was named Site Selection magazine’s Foreign Direct Investment Politician of the Year. In addition, the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) was recognized for our foreign investment strength, taking home the Second-Best Deal of the Year award for our effort in bringing a $1.8 billion fertilizer plant project to Lee County in 2012.

Construction began last year and the plant is expected to open in 2015 creating up to 170 full time jobs. Business thrives in Iowa because of proactive policies that cultivate start-up companies and support innovation in established companies. Iowa’s business climate clearly yields maximum benefit to the companies locating here, and importantly, to the citizens of our state.

Site Selection ranks states according to the number of qualified capital investment projects during the previous year. This year included rankings by total number of projects and projects per capita. For cities and metropolitan areas, the rankings include three population tiers. To be counted, projects must meet one or more of these criteria: an investment of at least $1 million, creation of 50 or more new jobs or construction of new space of at least 20,000 square feet.

2013 Governor’s Cup: Iowa Highlights
