Wind energy & economic development work hand-in-hand across Iowa

February 18, 2014

Yesterday I had the great privilege to speak at an event in Sioux City announcing further growth in Iowa’s wind energy sector.  The newly-announced partnership between Sioux City-based Sabre Industries and Clean Line Energy comes on the heels of MidAmerican’s nearly 450-turbine order from Siemens Energy – the largest onshore turbine order in the world.

Sabre produces the unique monopole structures required for the Rock Island Clean Line, a proposed 500-mile overhead direct current transmission line that will carry wind energy from Northwest Iowa to Grundy County, Illinois – an area with high demand for renewables.

The Rock Island Clean Line project will have a major economic impact on Iowa, stimulating the manufacturing industry and retaining jobs with important Iowa companies, like Sabre Industries.

Iowa is already ranked second in the nation in wind production and first in wind consumption as a percentage of overall energy use. These leadership positions coupled with great partnerships like the one between Sabre and Clean Line, poise us to help power the nation, moving us towards the grid of the future. Iowa truly is building America’s transmission grid.
