2,000+ veterans hired through state of Iowa program

June 21, 2016

Veterans: the state of Iowa wants you. WalletHub said Iowa is No. 1 for most veteran job opportunities and No. 2 for most affordable housing. Iowans enjoy a high quality of life and growing, safe cities. Iowa has a state program dedicated to recruiting and transitioning service members to civilian life. Home Base Iowa has already attracted more than 2,000 veterans to the state. Home Base Iowa also helps to facilitate access to special state benefits available only for veterans. For a full list of those benefits, visit the benefits page. Here are some highlights:

  • Military Pension Income Tax Exemption – fully exempts military pensions from state income tax.
  • Permissive Veterans Hiring Preference – allows veterans preferential treatment in hiring decisions for both public and private organizations.
  • Military Homeownership Assistance Program – provides veterans $5,000 towards down payment or closing costs of a home by using the Iowa Finance Authority program.
  • Higher Education Incentives – provides automatic, in-state tuition to veterans, their spouse and their dependents.

In addition to state benefits, nearly 40 Iowa cities, counties and towns have signed up to be “Home Base Iowa Communities.” These communities offer additional benefits for veterans, and businesses in these communities have pledged to hire veterans. Find a Home Base Iowa Community and learn what each one offers.
