Blue Bunny ice cream undergoing $40m expansion: Hear from the CEO why his company loves Iowa

Wells Enterprises, manufacturers of the popular Blue Bunny ice cream brand, has been one of northwest Iowa’s largest employers for decades.

Recently, the company announced a $40 million modernization and expansion project, expected to add 81 jobs to their Le Mars plant. To assist in the job creating expansion, the Iowa Economic Development Authority awarded the company benefits through the state of Iowa’s High Quality Jobs program. This is the third expansion for the company in the last two years, with a 65,000 sq. ft. plant addition in 2014 and a new corporate headquarters.  Wells Enterprises employs more than 2,200 people, and hundreds more work for its local suppliers, like BoDeans Baking Group, which makes ice cream cones and other related products.

Mike Wells, a member of the third-generation of the Wells family to run the company, says Iowa’s stable workforce, fair tax structure and government leadership have continued to support his company’s profitability.
