Small Business Saturday is a time to enjoy Iowa’s Main Streets

This coming Saturday is Small Business Saturday, a day when holiday shoppers are encouraged to visit local businesses. It’s a time to celebrate the local shops, boutiques and restaurants that bring vibrancy to Iowa’s main streets and communities. Historic commercial districts offer unique character in these communities, which is why for more than 30 years Main Street has worked with local leaders to preserve these districts.

The Main Street Iowa program and its communities have been looked upon as the “best of the best” in a national effort to revitalize downtowns across the country. There are 54 Main Street communities in Iowa, with Clarence and Fort Dodge joining the program this year. A map of Main Street Iowa communities demonstrates that whether you choose to live in the city or country, a bustling Main Street is nearby.

Becoming an official Main Street Iowa community requires a rigorous application program with a commitment to preservation of historic buildings. Communities accepted into the program receive ongoing, onsite training and technical assistance, and access to national Main Street America staff and private consultants.

Over the years, by working with the state, Main Street Iowa communities have realized the benefits of more than three million hours of volunteer time invested into improving city centers, a significantly increased job and business base and more than $1.7 billion in private investment to purchase, construct and rehabilitate downtown property.
