Growing Iowa’s Economy by Welcoming Home Our Veterans

November 24, 2015

Nearly two years after it got its start, Home Base Iowa feels right at home in our state. Today, more than 700 Iowa employers participate in the program, employing more than 1,500 servicemen and women.

What started as an effort to grow Iowa’s economy and show our appreciation for the men and women who’ve served our country is now accomplishing all it set out to do and more. But veterans aren’t the only ones who benefit from Home Base Iowa. So do Iowa companies that participate in the program. After all, our military veterans are a great source to fill the advanced jobs that Iowa companies have to offer. Not only do veterans have a strong work ethic, many have experience working in settings that offered stimulating challenges. These challenges helped to prepare them for future employment. More than 20 cities or counties in Iowa have earned the designation as Home Base Communities, meeting the criteria below:

  • At least 10 percent of the businesses in each community have been designated as Home Base Iowa Businesses.
  • Each of them has developed its own incentives for veterans beyond those offered by the state.
  • The community prominently displays the Home Base Iowa Community designation.
  • The community obtains a resolution of support from the appropriate local governing body.

Perhaps Governor Terry Branstad said it best, “Iowa has gained a national reputation as one of the best states to raise a family. The Home Base Iowa program now makes us a top state for veterans and their families. All Iowans benefit from having these heroes call Iowa home.”
