Iowa Continues to Lead the Nation in Wind Energy

May 20, 2015

The latest U.S. wind energy reports once again places Iowa on top in terms of total electricity generated - 28.5 percent in 2014 (equivalent to powering 1.5 million homes). In fact, the state's commitment to the renewable energy efforts puts us in great standing to meet the federal Clean Power Plan well before the 2030 deadline. Since 2004, Iowa utility companies, the state and private companies have invested $10 billion in wind energy, with 6,000 jobs now tied to the industry. Beyond quality jobs and lower utility costs for Iowans, the state's commitment to renewable energy has attracted several major tech companies to expand and/or build new facilities in the state, including Google, Facebook and Microsoft. Iowa's wind energy by the numbers (source: American Wind Energy Association):

  • 13 active advanced manufacturing facilities building components of wind turbine parts
  • 5,708 MW of installed wind capacity, with another 525 MW under construction
  • 3,447 installed turbines
  • 9.2 million metric tons of CO2 emissions avoided
