January 5, 2015

More than 550 Iowa businesses and eight communities have received the Home Base Iowa designation. In 2014, companies across the state pledged more than 9,500 jobs to veterans. The comprehensive program offers veterans several incentives, including:

  • No state income tax on their military pensions.
  • Receive a $5,000 grant toward the purchase of a home and also have the value of their homes assessed $1,850 less for tax purposes.
  • Attend public colleges and universities at the in-state tuition rate.
  • More easily obtain civilian licenses for skills learned in the military.

So far, 633 veterans have been hired through the program. Eight Iowa colleges and universities also became involved in the effort by joining the Home Base Iowa Certified Higher Academic Military Partner (CHAMP) program. No other state offers the same comprehensive approach to hiring Veterans as Iowa does through its Home Base Iowa program. The 2014 annual Military Report Card, published by Military Officers Association of America named Iowa as a “Top Military Friendly State.” Find out more here
