VISION IOWA BOARD AWARDS NEARLY $2 MILLION IN GRANTS

 

January 12, 2011 (Des Moines) – The Vision Iowa Board awarded $1,898,000 in grants to a recreation area in Iowa City, an historic theater in Toledo and a library in Parkersburg. The grants were approved Wednesday by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Urbandale.

 

“The Wieting Theatre is a wonderful historic property,” said Vision Iowa Board Chairwoman Regenia Bailey. “The Vision Iowa Board is impressed by the community’s commitment to its restoration.”

 

David Odekirk, Vision Iowa Review Committee Chairman, said, “The Iowa City project will be a great asset to not only area residents, but all Iowans. It’s a remarkable recreation area and we look forward to its completion.”

 

The Vision Iowa Board will release its 2011 Annual Status Report later this month.

 

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the River Enhancement Community Attraction and Tourism (RECAT) Fund:

 

Terry Trueblood Recreation Area – Iowa City

Total Project Cost: $8,264,541

Amount Requested: $2,000,000

Amount Awarded: $1,600,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 120 days.

 

This project includes the transformation of a 207-acre former sand and gravel operation along the Iowa River into a recreation area. Specific project components include site grading, trail construction, road and parking. In addition, a LEED certified lodge will be constructed as well as a beach and marina.

 

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

 

Wieting Theatre and Opera House Restoration - Toledo

Total Project Cost: $1,124,442

Amount Requested: $218,765

Amount Awarded: $218,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 60 days.

 

This project includes the major renovation of the Wieting Theatre. Specific components include new seating, new electrical systems, a new sprinkler system, an addition to the restroom facilities, a new sound system, new auditorium and stage lighting, new decorations and murals, repairs to the flooring and basement, repairs to the heating, cooling and plumbing systems, plus repairs to the state and projection system.

 

 

Kothe Memorial Library Expansion & Renovation Project - Parkersburg

Total Project Cost: $382,777

Amount Requested: $83,000

Amount Awarded: $80,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 180 days.

 

This project includes the construction of a 1,789-square-foot addition to the back of the existing library. In addition, updates to the existing library will include new electrical service, carpet replacement, basement wall repairs, plus new furniture and equipment.

 

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 343 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $129,809,705. Six RECAT grants, totaling $5,323,000 have been awarded. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for February 9, 2011, in Des Moines.
