$3.8 Million in Grants Awarded to Iowa Communities

 

March 9, 2011 (Des Moines) - The Vision Iowa Board awarded $3.8 million in grants to a riverfront amphitheater and festival park in Cedar Rapids and a trail along a creek restoration project in Dubuque. The grants were approved Wednesday by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Des Moines.

 

"Dubuque has been a great partner," said Vision Iowa Board Chairwoman Regenia Bailey. "This trail will be a great enhancement to the creek restoration and to the gateway of our state from Wisconsin."

 

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the River Enhancement Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

 

Cedar Rapids Riverfront Amphitheater and Festival Park – Cedar Rapids

Total Project Cost: $8,246,955

Amount Requested: $2,017,543

Amount Awarded: $1,600,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 120 days.

 

This project includes the construction of the Riverfront Amphitheater and Festival Park.  The Amphitheater will be large enough to accommodate a 5,000-person event and will include a wall recognizing project donors, an upper path and plaza space, a sloping lawn, seating terraces, a stage structure, a riverfront trail and naturalized river’s edge.  The Festival Park will be located to the south of the Amphitheater, connected by a plaza space for vendors and a tree-lined pedestrian path along H Street.  The Festival Park will be an open space with reinforced turf, lighting and vendor hook-ups, and river back restoration. 

 

Bee Branch Creek Restoration Project - Dubuque

Total Project Cost: $12,100,887

Amount Requested: $2,420,177

Amount Awarded: $2,250,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 60 days.

 

This project includes the replacement of an underground storm sewer with an open waterway and other public amenities. Amenities will include bike/hike trails, historic lighting, benches, and an amphitheater. 

 

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 344 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $130,233,205. Eight RECAT grants, totaling $9,173,000 have been awarded. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for April 13, 2011, in Urbandale.
