Series of Public Participation Training Workshops Offered Across the State

Free Workshops for Planning Professionals, City Officials and Community Stakeholders

April 13, 2011 (DES MOINES)  - The Iowa Department of Economic Development is offering FREE Public Participation Training Workshops in six Iowa communities in the months of April and May.   This is a unique opportunity to receive expert training regarding the importance of public participation as well as strategies for increasing local public participation in the planning and development process.

The workshops, titled input plan-it, will be offered in two different formats in each community.  The “Professionals Workshop” is a detailed, three-hour session designed for planning professionals, and local planning and project leaders.  Professional planners attending the workshop may be eligible for 2.75 certification maintenance credits.  The “Stakeholder Session” is a one-hour session for community leaders, representatives, residents and other stakeholders interested in getting the most out of public input.

The sessions are presented by Jay Schlinsog from DPN and Dave Ciaccio and Nick Bowden from Community ReDesigned in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Economic Development. Together, the team’s members bring more than fifty years of hands-on experience in planning, research and public participation.  The presentations will share hints, tips, tools and resources to more fully engage the community in local planning processes.
