Announcement of funding opportunity for Iowa AmeriCorps grants

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply for 2012-2013 AmeriCorps State funding

DES MOINES (September 22, 2011) – The Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service (ICVS) is pleased to announce the availability of federal funding in the form of AmeriCorps State program grants.  AmeriCorps is a national service program that helps meet community needs through the efforts of AmeriCorps members.  AmeriCorps programs are hosted by non-profit organizations, state agencies and local governments, elementary and secondary schools, Indian tribes, colleges and universities, community and faith-based organizations, and intermediary organizations representing a combination of these or similar groups, working together. The AmeriCorps State program offers different types of funding to meet the needs of various host agencies.  Planning grants are also available to help organizations develop their ideas for leading an AmeriCorps program.

In 2011, AmeriCorps members serving in Iowa were deployed to help with disaster response and recovery from the Missouri River flooding.  Members also helped to tutor at risk youth and run after school programs; provide outreach and services to victims of child and domestic abuse; build low-income housing and improve home energy efficiency; and improve nutrition through community gardens.  Potential applicants may do similar activities or use members to address other identified needs in their community.

For more information or to access the application materials, please visit the ICVS website at www.volunteeriowa.org.  The Request for Grant Applications (RFA) and accompanying documents are found on the ‘AmeriCorps—Start a Program’ page under the ‘For Organizations’ tab at http://www.volunteeriowa.org/americorps/start-ac.aspx.  Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a Letter of Intent to Apply to the ICVS by October 13, 2011, with final applications due November 14, 2011.
