Iowa Economic Development Authority presented with the President’s COSCDA Innovation Award

Des Moines, IA (September 26, 2011) - The Iowa Economic Development Authority was recently recognized with the President’s Award for Innovation from the Council of State Community Development Agencies (COSCDA), a national association that supports state efforts in community development, affordable housing, local economic development and state-local relations. The award, which recognizes innovative activities, policies or programs that have been implemented at the state level and demonstrated success in solving community needs, was presented to the Iowa Economic Development Authority at a reception during COSCDA’s Annual Training Conference held in Des Moines, September 18-21.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority received the award in recognition of the state of Iowa’s innovative use of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) resources to establish West Union, Iowa, as an Iowa Green Pilot Community. As an Iowa Green Pilot Community, West Union has become a national model demonstration of a holistic approach to greening and sustainably revitalizing its Main Street Iowa district.

“Although our agency is honored to receive this award, the community of West Union was the driving force behind this initiative,” said Debi Durham, director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority.  “Without their commitment and passion to spearhead this unique approach to redevelopment, we wouldn’t be talking about this today.”

The innovative community sustainability approaches being applied in West Union include six blocks of a porous paving system that will infiltrate, cleanse and cool storm water on site; 36,000 square feet of rain gardens; district geothermal heating and cooling system connected to 60 downtown buildings; LED street lights; building energy audits and energy efficiency incentives; electric vehicle charging stations; improved walkability and accessibility; upper-story housing; public art; increased community awareness of sustainability practices; a community gathering plaza; and a research project studying the environmental, social and economic impacts of the project.
