$830,000 in Grants Awarded to Iowa Communities

 

October 13, 2011 (Des Moines) - The Vision Iowa Board yesterday awarded $830,000 in grants to a trail project in Carlisle, a railroad museum in Boone and a youth development center in Jones County.

 

The grants were approved Wednesday by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Sioux City.

 

Carlisle did everything the Board asked of them,” said Vision Iowa Board Chairwoman Cathy Reece. “When this trail system is fully realized, it will stretch from Des Moines to Indianola, providing commuters and recreational bicyclists with 40 miles of trail.”

 

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

 

The Carlisle Nature Trail Loop - Carlisle

Total Project Cost: $2,573,822

Amount Requested: $519,965

Amount Awarded: $460,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 90 days.

 

This project includes the construction of approximately 3.3 miles of trail within the city of Carlisle. The trail will measure 10 feet in width and be separated from the street.

 

Museum Library - Boone

Total Project Cost: $960,935

Amount Requested: $290,903

Amount Awarded: $170,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 90 days. Additional funding from both the city and county.

 

This project includes the construction of a 9,000-square-foot building to house the new James H. Andrew Railroad Museum & Library, which will include a theater, library, and large area to display railroad artifacts. This facility will be built as an addition to the existing Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum Depot. 

 

Jones County Youth Development Center - Monticello

Total Project Cost: $1,129,915

Amount Requested: $282,478

Amount Awarded: $200,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 60 days. Additional funding from Jones County Extension.

 

This project includes the construction of new Jones County Youth Development Center located at the Monticello City Park/Fairgrounds. This facility will serve as the headquarters for the Jones County Extension and 4-H youth activities, as well as the Jones County Fair.  The 12,000-square-foot building will have 3,600 square feet dedicated to the Expo area.

 

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 347 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $131,292,929. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for November 9, 2011, in Des Moines.
