Nearly $135,000 in Grants Awarded to Iowa Communities

 

March 14, 2012 (Des Moines) - The Vision Iowa Board awarded $134,642 in grants to the restoration of the Johnny Carson Birthplace home and a trail project in Des Moines. The grants were approved Wednesday by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Des Moines.

 

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

 

Johnny Carson Birthplace Home Restoration - Corning

Total Project Cost: $139,100

Amount Requested: $21,100

Amount Awarded: $21,100

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 30 days.

 

This project includes the full restoration of Johnny Carson’s birthplace home. When completed, the home will be permanently maintained as a 1925 period home with memorabilia of Carson’s life and career.

 

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the River Enhancement Community Attraction and Tourism (RECAT) Fund:

 

Des Moines River Trail, Phase 1 – Des Moines

Total Project Cost: $1,603,504

Amount Requested: $113,542

Amount Awarded: $113,542

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 30 days.

 

This project includes construction of a 2.5 mile trail along the Des Moines River from the Meredith Trail in downtown Des Moines to the James W. Cownie Soccer and Baseball Parks, with several street connections to the trail from adjacent neighborhoods along the way. Other project components: signage, kiosks, benches and resting points, scenic overlooks. This project is Phase One of a larger project that will eventually connect downtown Des Moines to Carlisle.

 

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 353 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $132,922,529; 11 RECAT awards have been made, totaling $8,586,542. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for April 11, 2012, in Mason City.
