57 Coaches Sign On in Support of 2012 “Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge”

Additional mentors needed to bring home a win for Iowa’s youth!

September 18, 2012 - As high school, college and university coaches from across the state of Iowa progress through the 2012 football and fall athletic season, they are also working to bring home a win for Iowa’s youth. This year, 57 local coaches in Iowa have teamed up with University of Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz, Iowa State University Coach Paul Rhoads and University of Northern Iowa Coach Mark Farley to participate in a “Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge” with University of Nebraska Coach Bo Pelini, Kansas State University Coach Bill Snyder and University of Kansas Coach Charlie Weis.  The friendly challenge will gauge which state can recruit the most new mentors this football season.

To date, 553 Iowans have taken the Coaches’ Challenge by signing up to become a mentor.  In comparison, 331 new mentors have been recruited in Nebraska and 1,019 new mentors have been recruited in Kansas.  To bring home a win for Iowa’s youth, we need YOUR help!  Visit www.iowamentoring.org or call 800.308.5987 to take the Coaches’ Challenge and sign up to become a mentor in your community.

By signing up to become a mentor, fans can not only show their state/team pride, but can help improve the life of a child.  Mentors don’t need special skills or talents; they simply need to be willing to share their time with a young person who is in need of a positive adult role model.  By spending just one hour per week with a young person, mentoring can improve children and youth’s academic and social skills while lowering their risks for substance use and abuse.

Any new mentor application that is received between August 1 and November 30, 2012 will count toward the “score” of the respective state.  The overall winner of the 2012 Coaches’ Challenge will be announced the week of December 7.

In Iowa, the “Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge” is led by the Iowa Mentoring Partnership, an initiative of the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service. It is estimated that more than 3,000 young people in Iowa are currently in need of a mentor. The “Coaches’ Mentoring Challenge” strives to lower the “mentoring gap” in Iowa by recruiting more adults to volunteer as mentors.

Take the Coaches’ Challenge – sign up to be a mentor today!
