Vision Iowa Board Awards $321,000 to Projects in Osceola, Elkader and Spencer

 

September 13, 2012 (Des Moines) - The Vision Iowa Board awarded $321,000 in grants to a historic depot renovation in Osceola, white water feature in Elkader and riverfront development in Spencer. The grants were approved by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Des Moines yesterday.

 

The following project was approved for a grant awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

 

Historic Osceola Depot and Visitors Center – Osceola

Total Project Cost: $1,430,000

Amount Requested: $88,367

Amount Awarded: $88,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 60 days.

 

This project includes renovations to the interior of the historic Osceola Railway Depot. Specific components: upgrades to utilities and mechanical systems; interior renovations to the welcome/waiting area, offices and restrooms; paving the parking lot; and improving the lighting, landscaping and sidewalks around the building.

 

The following projects were approved for a grant awarded from the River Enhancement Community Attraction and Tourism (RECAT) Fund:

 

White Water Feature – Elkader

Total Project Cost: $247,757

Amount Requested: $66,799

Amount Awarded: $62,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 60 days.

 

This project includes developing a white water feature at a low-head dam that will be modified with special placement of large and small habitat boulders and a wave catalyst structure

 

Spencer’s Little Sioux Riverfront & Trails Project

Total Project Cost: $901,323

Amount Requested: $184,623

Amount Awarded: $171,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising in 90 days.

 

This project consists of three components: a prominent pedestrian boardwalk with grand viewing plaza and other associated riverfront improvements; the installation of a 140-foot-span, 10-foot-wide bridge connecting to the city’s trail network; and paving of almost 1.3 miles of 10-foot-wide recreational trail.

 

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 362 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $137,068,849; 10 RECAT projects have been awarded a total of $8,819,542. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for November 14, 2012, in Des Moines.
