Vision Iowa Board Awards $980,000 to Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden


August 9, 2012 (Des Moines) - The Vision Iowa Board awarded a $980,000 grant to an expansion project at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. The grant was approved by the Vision Iowa Board at their meeting in Des Moines yesterday.


The following project was approved for a grant awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:


Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden Expansion Project – Des Moines

Total Project Cost: $9,774,494

Amount Requested: $1,222,140

Amount Awarded: $980,000

Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising by December 31, 2012.


This project includes the closure of Robert D. Ray Drive at the freeway; new gardens connecting to the river; a new restaurant overlooking the display gardens and river; renovated conference, meeting areas and kitchen; a botany science lab; the creation of an outdoor event lawn and additional facility updates.


The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 361 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $136,980,849. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for September 12, 2012, in Des Moines.
