Iowa – Yamanashi Youth Forum at Valley High School


July 27, 2012 (Des Moines) - On August 2nd 20 high school students from Iowa’s Sister State of Yamanashi Japan will engage in a dialogue with a like number of central Iowa high school students.  The forum will take place at Valley High School in West Des Moines.  Discussion topics will center on comparisons of student life in the two countries. 


“Valley High School is honored to host the students and distinguished educators from our sister state,Yamanashi, Japan. Our hope is that the students will learn from one another for the benefit of the global world in which we live,” states Dr. Erika Cook, Associate Principal of Valley High School.


In addition, the 20 Yamanashi students will spend the morning of August 3rd teaching the Japanese art of origami paper folding to the 5th grades classes at Des Moines Capitol View School. 


The Japanese students will be home hosted by central Iowa families during their stay.


Iowa Sister States is a non-profit organization responsible for managing Iowa’s international partner state relationships.  Iowa has the following Sister States:  Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan; Yucatan, Mexico; Hebei Province, PRC; Terengganu, Malaysia; Stavropol Krai, Russia; Taiwan; Cherkasy Oblast, Ukraine; and Veneto Region, Italy.


The relationship with Yamanashi Prefecture dates to 1960, and is the first sister state relationship for the State of Iowa.
