National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium receives $468,000 CAT Grant
June 10, 2015 (Des Moines) – The Vision Iowa Board awarded a $468,000 Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grant for improvements to the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium in Dubuque. The grant was approved by the Vision Iowa Board at today's meeting.
The following project was approved:
River of Innovation: Connecting science and technology with the history and culture of America’s greatest river, Dubuque
Total Project Cost: $2,343,110
Amount Requested: $468,622
Amount Awarded: $468,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 60 days.
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a sting ray touch tank; the new BoatWorks exhibit, which includes the installation of the Iowa Machine Engine and Launch Works and Maker Space; an interactive exhibit called the River Concourse; new banners in the Mississippi River Plaza to link the new exhibit components together; and investment in energy sustainability and conservation measures.

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 403 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $152,193,006. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 8, 2015, in Des Moines.
