Economic impact of craft beer tops $100 million in Iowa

June 23, 2015 (Des Moines, Iowa) – The economic impact of the craft brewing industry in Iowa exceeded $100 million in 2014, according to a study prepared for the Iowa Wine and Beer Promotion Board. The full study is available here.

Data also showed that Iowa’s craft brewing industry generated 1,500 jobs and increased personal income by nearly $42 million for Iowans.

“The craft beer industry is one of Iowa’s emerging manufacturing segments,” said Megan McKay, a member of the Iowa Wine and Beer Promotion Board. “Craft beer drinkers represent a wide range of ages and interests, meaning the industry will continue to grow, enhancing the state’s economy and making jobs for our residents.”

The study noted Iowa craft beer consumers include both professional and blue collar workers, and that there is a symbiotic relationship with craft beer and the popularity of bicycling in Iowa. The number of breweries has doubled since 2009 to more than 50 in 29 counties across the state.

Nine-five percent of Iowa’s craft breweries are locally owned. A survey conducted as part of the study showed that 92 percent of craft breweries in Iowa sell their products at local events and festivals and nearly all said they were active members of their respective communities.

The Iowa Wine and Beer Promotion Board, created by statute in 1985 to promote the state’s wine and beer making industries, is administered by the Iowa Economic Development Authority with guidance from representatives of Iowa’s wineries and breweries.
