More than $1.8 million in CAT Grants Awarded to Four Projects

May 11, 2016 (Winterset) – The Vision Iowa Board awarded $1,821,174 in Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grants to a park project in Sioux City, environmental learning center in Allamakee County, skate park in Winterset and a trail and library project in Bloomfield. The grants were approved by the Vision Iowa Board at today’s meeting in Winterset.

“We’re excited to partner with all these communities, but Bloomfield’s award is noteworthy because it is the Board’s first award in Davis County,” said Cathy Reece, Vision Iowa Board Chair. “In total, 97 counties have received funds from Vision Iowa.”

The following projects were approved for grants awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

Cone Park Development Project, Sioux City
Total Project Cost: $3,809,077
Amount Requested: $316,684
Amount Awarded: $300,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 90 days.
Project Description: Park features will include open green space, a tubing hill, ice-skating rink/splash pad and four season’s day lodge. This phase of the project also includes snowmaking equipment and lighting.

Driftless Area Education and Visitors Center, Lansing
Total Project Cost: $2,907,822
Amount Requested: $486,386
Amount Awarded: $486,386
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 30 days.
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a 10,000 square foot, three-level Driftless Center along the Mississippi River to provide youth, residents and visitors the opportunity to learn about the natural sciences, conservation and history of the area. The facility will have displays and interpretive panels.

Winterset Area Skate Park, Winterset
Total Project Cost: $195,000
Amount Requested: $36,160
Amount Awarded: $36,160
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 30 days.
Project Description: This project involves the development of a nearly 8,000 square foot skate park in central Winterset. Features include concrete obstacles, railings, stairs and ramps of various shapes and sizes, spectator benches and shrub planter. The design will integrate the Covered Bridge theme.

Bloomfield/Davis County Library and Trail Enhancement Project, Bloomfield
Total Project Cost: $2,752,072
Amount Requested: $998,628
Amount Awarded: $998,628
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 30 days.
Project Description:  This project includes the renovation of the historic Andrew Carnegie Public Library and the construction of a 3,200 square foot addition. Additionally, 6,650 linear feet of trail will be constructed to connect the library, downtown square, community center and campus of the Davis County Community School District.

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. Currently, 422 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $157,528,848. The next Vision Iowa Board meeting is tentatively scheduled for June 8, 2016, in Emmetsburg.
