Nearly $1.5 million in CAT Grants Awarded to Five Projects

June 8, 2016 (Des Moines) – The Vision Iowa Board awarded $1,449,752 in Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grants to a library in Maynard, aquatic center in Traer, trail project in Waukee, an attraction expansion in Jefferson and the YMCA in Des Moines. 

“We’re very proud of the impact that Vision Iowa has had on the state in its 16 years,” said Cathy Reece, Vision Iowa Board chair. “We’ve invested $396,727,800 in 456 projects in 97 counties. Total project costs of all Community Attraction and Tourism, River Enhancement Community Attraction and Tourism and Vision Iowa projects tops $2.2 billion.”
 
The following projects were approved today for grants awarded from the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Fund:

Maynard Community Library Building, Maynard
Total Project Cost: $678,968
Amount Requested: $115,000
Amount Awarded: $115,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 30 days.
Project Description: The new 4,340-square-foot building will double the library space and include a community room.

Wind up with a New Traer Pool, Traer
Total Project Cost: $3,047,550
Amount Requested: $100,000
Amount Awarded: $100,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 30 days.
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a new ADA-compliant pool with zero-depth entry, concession and mechanical buildings, deck and shaded seating area. Amenities include a large slide, toddler slide, diving board and water sprinkler features.

Waukee Railroad Pergola, Waukee
Total Project Cost: $1,084,800
Amount Requested: $147,650
Amount Awarded: $147,650
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 30 days.
Project Description: This project includes a 350-foot-long railroad pergola structure, 25 vertical columns, a permanent shelter structure with plaza space, solar panel system to power the LED night lighting, a short trail extension and paving of the main parking lot.

Mahanay Memorial Carillon Expansion, Jefferson
Total Project Cost: $440,905
Amount Requested: $87,102
Amount Awarded: $87,102
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 30 days.
Project Description: This project includes the purchase and installation of 16 bells and 40 strikers to complete the bell tower’s four-octave, 47-bell carillon. Modifications to the top of the tower will be made to allow for the installation of the additional bells and a new lobby entrance constructed.

Wellmark YMCA Aquatic Center, Des Moines
Total Project Cost: $8,742,761
Amount Requested: $1,000,000
Amount Awarded: $1,000,000
Award Contingencies: Completion of fundraising within 30 days.
Project Description: This project includes an Olympic-size swimming pool and stadium seating with capacity for 1,500 people and team locker rooms.

The Vision Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. To date, 427 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $158,978,600.
