More than $950,000 awarded in CAT grants to four projects

June 15, 2017 (Des Moines) – The Enhance Iowa Board awarded $958,816 in Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grants to four projects. The Enhance Iowa Board approved the grants at yesterday’s meeting in Corning.

The following projects were approved:

Increasing Access to Art and Education, Sioux City
Total Project Cost: $3,543,648
Amount Requested: $324,934
Award Amount: $324,934

Project Description: This project includes the construction of a new 11,400-square-foot Learning Center and remodeling of the present Sioux City Art Center to increase both exhibition and storage spaces.

Union County Fair Building on Tradition Project, Afton
Total Project Cost: $1,560,000
Amount Requested: $262,533
Amount Awarded: $262,533

Project Description: This project includes the construction of a new cattle barn and a new swine/sheep barn with show arena. The barns will be constructed with a tin or steel shell and include energy efficient lighting and other technologies to allow three-season meeting and event use, as well as summertime fairground use.

New Hampton Pool Project, New Hampton
Total Project Cost: $627,000
Amount Requested: $106,445
Amount Awarded: $106,445

Project Description: This project includes updating the existing pool with a splashpad, toddler slide, drop slide and anchored floatables.

Lone Tree Community School Wellness Center, Lone Tree
Total Project Cost: $3,431,595
Amount Requested: $264,904
Amount Awarded: $264,904

Project Description: The 21,000-square-foot facility will house a full-size basketball court, wrestling room, areas for cardio and weight training, women’s fitness area, indoor track, concession stand, two locker rooms and family restroom.

The Enhance Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. To date, 17 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $5,391,297. The next Enhance Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for July 12, 2017, in Urbandale.
