Nearly $1.5 million in CAT grants awarded to projects in four Iowa communities
 
July 10, 2019 (Des Moines) – The Enhance Iowa Board awarded $1,449,648 in Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grants to sports complexes in Council Bluffs and West Des Moines, a swimming pool in Cascade and a cinema in Iowa City. The awards were approved at today’s meeting in Des Moines.

The following projects were approved for grants:

Project Name: Iowa West Sports Plex, Council Bluffs
Total Project Cost: $8,361,167
Amount Awarded: $400,000
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a 75,000-square-foot indoor turf facility for athletes of multiple sports. The facility will house one regulation youth soccer field that can be broken out into separate smaller fields for practice and play, drop down hitting tunnels and netting for diamond sports, three electronic scoreboards, concessions, staff work space, conference rooms, restrooms/change rooms and a family gathering mezzanine level.

Project Name: MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex, West Des Moines
Total Project Cost: $33,249,382
Amount Awarded: $500,000
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a 294,000-square-foot facility focused on youth athletics. The facility will house two sheets of ice; one full-sized turf soccer field; a convertible hardcourt that will accommodate four basketball or eight volleyball courts; and five full-sized outdoor soccer, lacrosse and football fields. 

Project Name: Wave of the Future, Cascade
Total Project Cost: $3,388,515
Amount Awarded: $228,888
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a new swimming pool at the same site as the existing pool. This new facility will feature zero-depth entry, an ADA-compliant bathhouse, sun protective structures, six 25-yard lap lanes, two diving towers and a small water slide.

Project Name: FilmScene, Iowa City
Total Project Cost: $1,549,371
Amount Awarded: $320,760
Project Description: This project includes the purchase of a newly constructed state-of-the-art cinema facility within the 15-story, multi-use Chauncey building. The space will consist of two main theaters, an educational-based theater, offices with a kitchenette and conference room.

The Enhance Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. To date, 55 CAT awards have been granted by the board, totaling $17,418,301. The next Enhance Iowa Board meeting is scheduled for August 14, 2019, in Bettendorf.
