Enhance Iowa Board awards $1.3 million in CAT grants for projects in four communities
 
September 11, 2019 (DES MOINES) – At today’s meeting, the Enhance Iowa Board awarded $1.3 million in Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) grants to an accessible and inclusive park in Ames, a community center in Hampton, a skatepark in Des Moines and a regional YMCA in Marion. 

The details for the projects receiving grants are as follows:

Project Name: Ames Miracle Park – Inis Grove Accessibility Improvements, Ames
Total Project Cost: $2,649,000
Amount Awarded: $200,000
Project Description: This project will create an accessible and inclusive park on the north side of the existing Inis Grove Park. The park will include a 15,000-square-foot all-inclusive playground with five separate playground areas built on a completely rubberized safety surface, a Miracle League Field and accessible restrooms and access to the park. 

Project Name: Franklin County Convention Center Extreme Makeover/Renovation, Hampton
Total Project Cost: $1,198,600
Amount Awarded: $200,000
Project Description: This project will include construction of a small meeting room with a kitchenette and restroom, the addition of a multipurpose storage space, new interior wall covering, upgrades to the foyer and restroom, technology upgrades and exterior improvements to the Convention Center.

Project Name: Lauridsen Skatepark and Spectator Park, Des Moines
Total Project Cost: $6,325,981
Amount Awarded: $500,000
Project Description: This project includes the construction of the country’s largest skatepark with a total of 88,000 square feet of skateable terrain, a pedestrian walkway, shaded seating, shade structures and native landscaping.

Project Name: New Regional YMCA in Marion, Marion
Total Project Cost: $20,311,086
Amount Awarded: $400,000
Project Description: This project includes the construction of a new 75,000-square-foot regional YMCA to replace an outdated facility built 56 years ago. The new facility will have three basketball/volleyball courts, two soft-surface racquetball courts and a one-eighth mile track that encircles the courts. In addition, the facility will include 7,000 square feet of fitness and exercise space, a community room, a six-lane lap pool, a separate warm water leisure pool and a café. 

The Enhance Iowa Program provides financial incentives to communities for the construction of recreational, cultural, educational or entertainment facilities that enhance the quality of life in Iowa. To date, 68 CAT grants have been awarded by the board, totaling $21,274,848. The next Enhance Iowa Board meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 9 in Des Moines.
